What nobody tells you about housing near UIUC
Champaign-Urbana is the most Indian-student-dense college town in America relative to its size. Almost every landlord has rented to Indian students before and many don't require US credit β just a larger security deposit. The catch: good apartments near campus get signed in October for the following August. If you're coming Fall 2026, the signing window may have already started. The MTD bus system is free with your student ID and genuinely excellent β you do not need a car here.
Green St / Campus Town
SafeThe epicenter. Green Street has restaurants, grocery, and nightlife all within blocks of campus. You will run into Indian classmates constantly. Most desirable area β sign early or miss out. Buildings are older but well-maintained.
Urbana
SafeMore affordable and quieter. Free MTD bus to campus runs every 10 min during the day. Many Indian grad students choose Urbana for the price and calmer environment. Meijer nearby for groceries.
South Champaign
SafeMiddle ground on price and proximity. Popular with Indian couples and families. The Windsor Road area is particularly common for Indian grad students. Quieter than Campus Town which suits many people.
North Champaign
